What are Crickets?

House crickets, originally from Europe, thrive indoors once settled. They’re easily recognized by the loud nighttime chirping males produce by rubbing their wings to attract females.

How do I identify Crickets?

Crickets are light yellow-brown with three dark head bands and long antennae. As nocturnal insects, they hide in warm, dark areas during the day and often rest on walls or fences when drawn to light. Field crickets are larger and darker than ground crickets, measuring 16–22 mm. They prefer warm, moist environments and feed on plants, insects, or indoor fabrics. Although sometimes visible, they’re most often identified by their loud nighttime chirping.

How do I identify Fleas?

Crickets do not pose a health risk to humans. They can cause damage to property, especially those covered in fabric. Inside they are more a nuisance than a problem. Their chirping can disrupt sleep and they may eat at fabrics leaving small holes.

Crickets feed on crops and seedlings at night, causing agricultural damage. Indoors, vacuuming helps remove crickets and eggs. Reduce moisture, clear plant beds and woodpiles, and switch to yellow lighting. Seal exterior gaps to prevent crickets from entering when attracted to light.
